PH Congress proclaims BBM-Sara as winners of 2022 elections

A joint session of the Philippine Congress has proclaimed Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. and his running mate Sara Inday Duterte as the electoral victors on May 25, 2022.

The Congress — sitting as National of Board Canvassers— completed the canvassing of certificates of canvass, where Marcos garnered a landslide win of 31,629,783 million votes.

Meanwhile, Vice President-elect Duterte garnered approximately 32,208,417 or approximately 60% of the total votes cast in the vice presidential race.

The newly elected executives almost always receive the certificate of canvass with their family members.

As for the president-elect, his sister Sen. Imee Marcos-Manotoc, mother and former first lady Imelda Marcos, son Joseph Simon, cousin Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, sister Irene Marcos-Araneta, and wife Liza Araneta-Marcos were present at the Batasang Pambansa.

“I am humbled because for anyone in public service or in a public life, the most valuable thing you may receive from a fellow citizen is their vote,” Marcos Jr. said in an impromptu speech after his proclamation.

In an interview with CNN Philippines on the same day, his elder sister Sen. Marcos-Manotoc said that their family hopes for a speedy proclamation to cement his brother's surreal win.

“What’s most important to us is, of course, our name, the family name that has become so controversial, and so difficult at times to bear. The legacy of my father is what we hope will be clarified at last,” she said when asked about her thoughts on the infamous legacy of the Marcoses.

Meanwhile, Duterte's prominent family members were absent at Batasan, including her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, who stayed put in Malacañang.

Mayor Duterte expressed her gratitude to her supporters and dedicated her victory to victims of terrorism, abuse, and criminality.

“Magtulungan tayo para sa isang bayan na mapayapa at nagkakaisa. Mahal natin ang Pilipinas," she said.
